What is Job Evaluation & Grading?

JOB EVALUATION (JE)

What is JE?
Job evaluation is a systematic process used to assess the relative value of jobs within an organisation. It helps in establishing a fair and equitable pay structure.

What is the purpose of JE?
The primary aim is to ensure fairness and equity in reward practices. It also supports career pathing, learning and development and more generally, the effective management of talent.

What is the outcome of JE?
The outcome of job evaluation is a structured job hierarchy or ranking of jobs that is used to create organisation levels for the purpose of benchmarking.

GRADING

What is Grading?
Grading involves the analysis of a job and applying a methodology, with defined factors or dimensions, to allocate points or scores to that job.

What is the purpose of Grading?
Grading determines the size of a job in a scientific way, which is objective and consistent. It is based on the minimum requirements of a job and not the capabilities of an incumbent.

What is the outcome of Grading?
The outcome of grading is the actual weighting of a job expressed in numbers, codes or a combination of both. A grading structure which is becoming more commonly used across Africa is called “engage“, but there are a multitude others, too.

Value gained from Job Evaluation & Grading

Fairness and Transparency

Supports internal equity and guides consistency in reward decision-making.

Attraction and Retention

Enhances the levels of competitiveness of the organisation to attract and retain the right skills.

Cost of Employment

Improves the accuracy of labour budgeting and supports the management of fixed costs related to labour.

Career Pathing

The job hierarchy that results from job evaluation serves as a base for the development of career paths. It offers a clear view of advancement opportunities, fostering employee development and high performance

Competency Framework

A critical input to the development of a competency framework is job analysis (which is conducted during grading). This provides the technical and behavioral competencies required to fulfill a role.

APAG’s JE & GradingTool

The engage tool

  • Africa People Advisory Group uses an evaluation tool called “engage”. engage is a modern factor-based tool, much like other well-known tools being used globally, and allows us to focus on the output of the role as opposed to input and activity.
  • We do NOT require Job Profiles or descriptors to evaluate roles using engage, and our ideal approach is to work with an evaluation committee that will evaluate roles with us (descriptors are useful but not critical).
  • Results can be provided in any grading structure of the client’s choice, including current in-house systems.
