What is Grading?
Grading involves the analysis of a job and applying a methodology, with defined factors or dimensions, to allocate points or scores to that job.
What is the purpose of Grading?
Grading determines the size of a job in a scientific way, which is objective and consistent. It is based on the minimum requirements of a job and not the capabilities of an incumbent.
What is the outcome of Grading?
The outcome of grading is the actual weighting of a job expressed in numbers, codes or a combination of both. A grading structure which is becoming more commonly used across Africa is called “engage“, but there are a multitude others, too.
Supports internal equity and guides consistency in reward decision-making.
Enhances the levels of competitiveness of the organisation to attract and retain the right skills.
Improves the accuracy of labour budgeting and supports the management of fixed costs related to labour.
The job hierarchy that results from job evaluation serves as a base for the development of career paths. It offers a clear view of advancement opportunities, fostering employee development and high performance
A critical input to the development of a competency framework is job analysis (which is conducted during grading). This provides the technical and behavioral competencies required to fulfill a role.
